WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senate Republicans have formally removed a proposal to spend $1 billion on security improvements for President Donald Trump’s planned White House ballroom, clearing a major obstacle to advancing a broader immigration enforcement funding package.

The funding had been included in a Senate Judiciary Committee proposal that would provide approximately $70 billion for immigration-related agencies through the remainder of Trump’s term. However, revised legislative text released Wednesday no longer contains the ballroom security funding.

The proposal became controversial after Senate Democrats vowed to oppose it and use procedural tactics to force politically difficult votes for Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer claimed Democrats successfully pressured Republicans into abandoning the funding request.

Complicating matters further, the Senate parliamentarian previously ruled that the ballroom security funding did not qualify under budget reconciliation rules, the process Republicans are using to bypass a Senate filibuster. The ruling significantly reduced the proposal’s chances of remaining in the legislation.

The revised bill now focuses primarily on immigration enforcement funding, including approximately $31 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), $13 billion for Customs and Border Protection, and $2.5 billion for the Department of Homeland Security.

The White House downplayed the removal, arguing it resulted from parliamentary restrictions rather than a political retreat. Trump has previously stated that the ballroom’s estimated $400 million construction cost would be covered by private donors, though the administration sought federal funds for security enhancements.

Republican leaders are expected to move forward with votes on the broader immigration package as they seek long-term funding protections for border and immigration enforcement agencies.

According to multiple reports, journalists visited the home of Platner’s mother-in-law and a restaurant owned by his mother on Wednesday. Following the visits, Platner canceled a scheduled appearance with the veterans advocacy group VoteVets and ended the remainder of his interstate campaign trip.

The developments come as Platner continues to navigate a series of controversies that have drawn national attention. Most recently, reports surfaced alleging that Platner sent sexually explicit messages to other women while married. The allegations follow previous disputes involving old social media posts and criticism over a tattoo that opponents argued resembled Nazi imagery before it was later covered.

Despite the controversies, Platner has continued to build support among prominent Democrats as he seeks the party’s nomination to challenge Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) in 2026. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has endorsed Platner after initially encouraging Maine Gov. Janet Mills to enter the race. Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have also backed his candidacy.

When asked this week about his support for Platner, Schumer reiterated his endorsement and expressed confidence that Democrats could defeat Collins and regain control of the Senate.

Recent polling from the University of New Hampshire reportedly shows Platner holding a narrow lead over Collins in a potential general election matchup. With no major Democratic challenger currently in the race, Platner remains the frontrunner for his party’s nomination despite ongoing campaign challenges.

The proposal would affect major economies including the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, China, India, South Korea, Taiwan, Brazil, and Switzerland. The administration says the tariffs are intended to protect American workers from unfair competition created by products linked to forced labor practices abroad.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said countries that fail to enforce restrictions on imports produced through forced labor create an uneven playing field for American businesses and workers. The proposed tariffs stem from investigations conducted under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.

According to administration documents, imports from the United Kingdom, European Union, Canada, Mexico, and Taiwan could face 10% tariffs, while imports from China, Japan, India, South Korea, Brazil, and Switzerland could be subject to tariffs of 12.5%.

The proposal has drawn immediate criticism from some U.S. allies. The European Commission argued that the tariffs would violate the spirit of a trade agreement reached with Washington last year and said the European Union shares U.S. concerns regarding forced labor but opposes the use of tariffs as a remedy.

The tariffs would not take effect immediately and remain subject to a public comment period and federal review process. If implemented, they would represent another major expansion of Trump’s trade agenda ahead of the 2026 elections.

George Santos engaged in improper trading activity by allegedly placing a wager on a prediction market concerning his own attendance at President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address earlier this year.

According to multiple reports, Santos allegedly placed a bet on Kalshi, a regulated prediction market platform, regarding whether he would attend Trump’s February address to Congress. The investigation reportedly began after Kalshi flagged the trade to federal regulators due to concerns that Santos may have possessed unique knowledge about the outcome of the event.

Santos had publicly indicated on social media that he planned to attend the speech before later informing followers that travel complications prevented him from making the trip. Authorities are now examining whether any wagers were placed using nonpublic information that could have provided an unfair advantage in the market.

The Department of Justice and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission have not publicly commented on the investigation. NPR first reported the probe, citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter.

When asked whether he maintained a Kalshi account, Santos declined to provide a direct answer. In a social media post, he dismissed the reports and said he does not engage with what he described as “rag reporting.”

The investigation comes amid increased scrutiny of prediction markets such as Kalshi and Polymarket. Lawmakers and regulators have raised concerns about potential insider trading involving political events, military actions, and election-related markets.

Santos was expelled from Congress in 2023 following an ethics investigation and later pleaded guilty to wire fraud and identity theft. He was sentenced to prison in 2025 before receiving a commutation from President Trump later that year.

The decision permits Alabama to move forward with a map adopted by state lawmakers three years ago that contains one majority-Black congressional district among the state’s seven U.S. House districts. The ruling comes as Alabama prepares for special primary elections scheduled for August.

The state sought emergency intervention from the Supreme Court after a three-judge federal panel rejected its request to use the map. That lower court had ordered Alabama to continue using a court-drawn map that was in place during the 2024 election cycle and resulted in the election of two Black Democrats to Congress.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall argued that the state’s map was lawfully enacted and that elected lawmakers, rather than federal judges, should determine district boundaries. State officials also disputed claims that the map intentionally discriminated against Black residents.

The dispute follows a recent Supreme Court ruling involving Louisiana congressional districts that weakened portions of the Voting Rights Act and prompted renewed redistricting battles across several Southern states. Republican-led states have increasingly sought to redraw congressional maps following that decision.

The Supreme Court’s order allows Alabama to proceed with the challenged map while legal proceedings continue. The underlying lawsuit remains unresolved, and further court action could still affect future elections.

The ruling is one of several redistricting disputes nationwide as both parties seek advantages ahead of the 2026 midterm elections and the 2028 election cycle.

The proposal would remove existing constitutional restrictions that prohibit drawing legislative and congressional maps to favor political parties. It would also allow lawmakers to approve new district maps through a simple majority vote rather than requiring broader bipartisan support.

Supporters say the changes are necessary to respond to aggressive redistricting efforts in Republican-controlled states and to counter what they view as court decisions that have weakened federal voting rights protections. State Senate Deputy Majority Leader Mike Gianaris argued that Democrats should not unilaterally limit themselves while other states pursue partisan redistricting strategies.

Republicans strongly oppose the measure. Rep. Mike Lawler of New York criticized the proposal as hypocritical, arguing that Democrats are abandoning principles of fair representation for political advantage.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has endorsed the amendment, saying it would provide New Yorkers with a way to respond to redistricting efforts occurring elsewhere in the country. Supporters believe the changes could ultimately increase Democratic representation in Congress if new district maps are adopted.

Before reaching voters, the amendment must pass the state Legislature in two consecutive sessions. If approved both times, New Yorkers would vote on the proposal in a statewide referendum expected in 2027.

The debate comes as redistricting remains a major political battleground nationwide, with both major parties seeking advantages ahead of future congressional elections.

According to an Economist/YouGov poll released Monday, 55% of respondents said they view Pope Leo favorably, while 23% view him unfavorably, giving him a net favorability rating of +32. By comparison, 37% said they view Trump favorably and 59% unfavorably, resulting in a net favorability rating of -22.

The 54-point gap in net favorability highlights the pope’s popularity across a broad range of Americans. The survey found that both figures were viewed somewhat more favorably by men than women, though Pope Leo maintained a positive rating among both groups.

Leo, elected pope in 2025, has gained international attention for promoting peace initiatives and calling for diplomatic solutions to global conflicts. His comments regarding conflicts in the Middle East have occasionally put him at odds with political leaders, including Trump.

Earlier this year, Trump criticized the pope over remarks related to peace efforts involving Iran, suggesting Leo’s comments were politically motivated. The pope later clarified that his statements were intended as general appeals for peace and were not directed at any specific leader.

Trump renewed his criticism over the weekend after Pope Leo met with Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson at the Vatican. Despite the disagreements, the pontiff has generally avoided direct political confrontations.

The Economist/YouGov survey was conducted from May 29 through June 1 among 1,604 adults. The reported margin of error was approximately 3.5 percentage points.

The lawsuit challenges a March agreement by the Interior Department that canceled the Attentive Energy offshore wind project. As part of the settlement, the federal government agreed to reimburse approximately $795 million to a subsidiary of French energy company TotalEnergies after determining the project would not move forward.

State officials contend the decision violated federal administrative procedures and improperly halted a project that was expected to provide electricity to roughly 1.3 million homes. Supporters of the project also argue it could have reduced long-term energy costs for consumers while helping states meet renewable energy targets.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul criticized the agreement, describing it as a misuse of taxpayer funds. Attorney General Letitia James accused the administration of orchestrating what she called a “sham deal” designed to advance fossil fuel development at the expense of renewable energy projects.

The Interior Department has defended the settlement. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the reimbursement reflected the realities of a project that was no longer economically viable and allowed the company to redirect investments elsewhere.

The dispute is part of a broader conflict over offshore wind development. President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized offshore wind projects as costly and inefficient, and his administration has moved to halt or reconsider several projects approved under previous administrations.

The lawsuit seeks to reverse the cancellation and restore the lease, with the case expected to have significant implications for the future of offshore wind development in the United States.

The bipartisan New Mexico Truth Commission announced that it has issued 14 subpoenas as part of an effort to examine allegations of sex trafficking, abuse, and potential misconduct connected to Epstein’s sprawling ranch near Stanley, New Mexico. Among the entities receiving subpoenas are Deutsche Bank, the FBI, and other organizations believed to possess records relevant to the investigation.

Commission members say the inquiry is focused not only on alleged crimes committed at the ranch but also on identifying the individuals, institutions, and networks that may have enabled Epstein to operate in New Mexico for more than two decades.

Survivors, including Rachel Benavidez, have testified before the commission, while relatives of Virginia Giuffre have also provided information regarding allegations connected to the property. The panel is reviewing testimony and evidence to determine whether criminal referrals or additional legal actions may be warranted.

New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez has encouraged additional survivors and witnesses to come forward as the investigation continues. Commission officials say the inquiry could have broader implications if evidence emerges involving influential public figures or organizations.

The investigation also highlights ongoing efforts by local residents and advocates to memorialize Epstein’s alleged victims. A memorial near Zorro Ranch has reportedly been vandalized multiple times but has repeatedly been rebuilt by supporters.

The commission has not announced a timeline for completing its work, and the investigation remains ongoing.

According to Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the tunnel was uncovered during the execution of a search warrant at a residence in the Nueva Tijuana neighborhood. Investigators were initially looking into potential violations of Mexico’s firearms, explosives, and public health laws.

Officials said the tunnel stretches approximately 265 meters (about 870 feet) and runs more than 20 feet below ground. The passage reportedly included lighting, ventilation systems, and an electronic floor-mounted transport mechanism designed to move items between Mexico and the United States.

During the search of the property, authorities seized ammunition, suspected methamphetamine, marijuana, cell phones, and various documents. Investigators believe the location served as a storage, logistics, and trafficking hub for criminal organizations operating along the border.

The home is located south of the Otay Mesa area near California State Route 905, one of the busiest commercial crossing corridors between the United States and Mexico. Officials have not publicly identified which location in San Diego the tunnel may connect to, though investigators say it appears to reach a well-known street on the U.S. side.

The operation involved Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office, the Criminal Investigation Agency, federal prosecutors, and other members of the Mexican Security Cabinet. Authorities have seized the property and all evidence collected as the investigation continues. No arrests have been announced.

According to reports from both U.S. and Israeli media outlets, Trump urged Netanyahu during a phone call Monday to avoid a major military operation in Beirut. Axios reported that the conversation became heated, with Trump allegedly expressing frustration over Israeli actions that threatened to complicate ongoing diplomatic efforts involving Iran and Lebanon.

Following the call, Trump announced on Truth Social that Netanyahu had agreed not to proceed with a major strike on Beirut. Trump also claimed that representatives connected to Hezbollah had agreed to halt attacks on Israel if Israeli forces exercised restraint.

The reported intervention triggered backlash from members of Israel’s political right. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir publicly urged Netanyahu to reject Trump’s demands and continue military operations against Hezbollah. Ben-Gvir argued that Israel should take advantage of the current situation to further weaken the Iran-backed militant group, which many Israelis view as a major security threat.

Netanyahu later clarified that Israeli operations in southern Lebanon would continue and warned that Israel reserved the right to strike targets in Beirut if Hezbollah attacks persisted. Fighting between Israel and Hezbollah has continued despite a ceasefire agreement reached last month.

The dispute comes as Iran has suspended indirect talks with the United States, arguing that Israeli military operations in Lebanon violate broader ceasefire understandings.

The lawsuit centers on Texas Senate Bill 8, often referred to as the Texas Women’s Privacy Act, which took effect in December 2025. The law restricts access to certain private spaces in public facilities based on a person’s sex assigned at birth and authorizes fines against government entities that fail to comply.

Paxton’s office alleges that Denton officials failed to take corrective action after being notified that the June 7 “Big Gay Swim Day” event planned to offer gender-neutral multi-occupancy changing rooms at the Civic Center Pool. In a statement, Paxton said he would ensure Texas cities follow state laws designed to protect women and children in public facilities.

However, the organizations behind the event, PRIDENTON and OUTreach Denton, contend the lawsuit is unnecessary because references to gender-neutral changing rooms were removed from promotional materials weeks before the legal action was filed. The groups described the lawsuit as a waste of taxpayer resources and said city officials had already informed organizers of the requirements under state law.

Denton officials also stated that steps had been taken to ensure the facility complies with Texas law. No fines have been issued against the city.

The lawsuit follows complaints from local residents who argued the event’s original plans violated Senate Bill 8. A court will ultimately determine whether the city’s actions complied with the law and whether the lawsuit should proceed.

The research examined how AI assistance affected performance on math and reading tasks involving more than 1,000 participants. Researchers found that people using AI tools initially completed tasks faster and more accurately than those working without assistance. However, when the AI was removed, their performance often declined.

In one experiment involving 350 participants solving fraction problems, those who used AI performed well while assistance was available. Once the tool was taken away, accuracy fell and participants were more likely to abandon difficult problems rather than continue working through them.

“We show that just 10-15 minutes of AI interaction can result in significant impairments in independent performance and persistence,” the researchers wrote, warning that the long-term effects of daily AI use remain largely unknown.

A separate reading comprehension study involving 670 participants produced similar results. Researchers found that users who relied on AI to provide direct answers showed the largest declines in independent performance. Participants who used AI primarily for hints, explanations, or clarification did not experience the same level of impairment.

Co-author Rachit Dubey told Futurism that the issue was not simply incorrect answers. “They’re also not willing to try without AI,” he said.

The findings add to a growing debate over how artificial intelligence may affect learning, education, and critical thinking as AI tools become increasingly common in everyday life.

The changes, which take effect June 8, amend tariffs imposed under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act. The White House said the revised rules are intended to support U.S. manufacturers and farmers while encouraging companies to source more materials from domestic producers.

Under the new framework, tariffs on some agricultural and industrial machinery will be reduced to 15% through Dec. 31, 2027. Products containing significant amounts of U.S.-produced metal will receive additional benefits. Derivative products made with at least 85% U.S. “melted and poured” steel or “smelted and cast” aluminum will face an effective tariff rate of 10%.

The proclamation also establishes special treatment for imports from several allied economies. Products originating from Japan, South Korea, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Taiwan will have a maximum effective tariff rate of 15%. Meanwhile, qualifying imports from Canada and Mexico under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement will continue facing 25% tariffs on non-U.S. metal content.

The administration said the policy supports ongoing investments in domestic mining and smelting operations, citing projects involving Century Aluminum, Emirates Global Aluminum, Rio Tinto, Highland Copper, and Ivanhoe Electric.

Trump has argued that tariffs are necessary to rebuild American manufacturing capacity and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers, while critics continue to warn that higher import costs could increase prices for some businesses and consumers.

The breach occurred Sunday and continued into early Monday morning, when unauthorized posts appeared on Bentivegna’s account. The content reportedly included footage of Iranian political figures, anti-U.S. messaging, references to the television series “Game of Thrones,” and audio clips associated with wartime propaganda broadcasts.

Bentivegna alerted colleagues through Facebook, warning them not to interact with any messages, links, or unusual activity originating from the compromised account while efforts were underway to restore control.

According to reports, the attackers may have exploited Meta’s artificial intelligence assistant tools during the account recovery process to gain access. Meta later stated that the affected accounts had been secured and that its investigation was ongoing.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran and follows a series of cyber-related threats targeting American military personnel and government systems. Military officials have previously warned that foreign adversaries increasingly use digital platforms, commercial data, and social media to gather information about U.S. service members.

Earlier this year, U.S. Central Command told Congress that hostile governments and organizations continue to exploit commercially available location data and online activity to monitor military personnel. Defense officials have warned about such vulnerabilities for more than a decade.

The Pentagon has not publicly attributed responsibility for the breach, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The fund was established earlier this month as part of a settlement tied to President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service over the disclosure of his tax records. According to the administration, the program was intended to provide financial compensation and formal apologies to individuals who believe they were improperly targeted by federal agencies.

The proposal quickly became controversial after critics raised concerns that some recipients could include individuals involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Opponents argued the fund could become a taxpayer-funded vehicle for compensating Trump allies and others accused or convicted of wrongdoing.

The backlash extended beyond Democrats. Former Vice President Mike Pence described the possibility of compensating Jan. 6 participants as “deeply offensive,” while several Republican senators reportedly expressed concerns during private meetings with Justice Department officials.

The controversy has also complicated negotiations surrounding a separate immigration enforcement package valued at approximately $70 billion. Some Republican lawmakers have pushed the administration to abandon the fund entirely in order to secure broader support for other legislative priorities.

A federal court hearing is scheduled for June 12, when a judge will consider whether to extend the temporary injunction. Until then, Justice Department officials say no funds will be distributed and work on implementing the program will remain paused.

The outcome of the case could determine whether the fund moves forward, is modified, or is permanently abandoned.

The lawsuit follows a criminal investigation launched earlier this year after authorities alleged that Phoenix Ikner, the suspect in the Florida State University mass shooting, used ChatGPT while planning the attack. State officials claim the case raises broader concerns about how artificial intelligence systems may influence vulnerable individuals.

According to the complaint, OpenAI violated Florida consumer protection laws by misleading the public about ChatGPT’s safety while failing to adequately address known risks. The lawsuit includes multiple counts of deceptive trade practices and negligence and seeks damages on behalf of at least seven individuals who allege the technology contributed to harmful outcomes, including suicide and delusional behavior.

OpenAI denied the allegations. Company spokesperson Drew Pusateri told NBC News that ChatGPT “did not encourage or promote illegal or harmful activity” and noted that the interactions cited in the complaint occurred on an earlier version of the platform.

The legal challenge represents one of the most significant state-level actions against a major artificial intelligence company. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been increasingly critical of large AI firms and has advocated for stronger consumer protections, including proposals for an AI Bill of Rights.

The lawsuit comes as regulators, lawmakers, and technology companies continue to debate how artificial intelligence should be governed as its capabilities and public use expand rapidly.

The move follows renewed tensions involving Israel’s military operations in Lebanon and Gaza. Iranian officials contend that continued Israeli military activity violates conditions necessary for diplomatic engagement and have demanded an immediate halt to operations in both territories before talks can resume.

According to the Tasnim News Agency, Iranian leaders are also considering broader responses, including activating additional regional allies and potentially restricting access to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes for oil and natural gas. Roughly one-fifth of global petroleum consumption passes through the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to international markets.

Markets reacted quickly to the developments, with oil prices rising more than 2% amid concerns that a wider regional conflict could disrupt energy supplies. Analysts have long warned that any interruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could have significant consequences for global energy prices and international trade.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran would not support any future agreement that fails to guarantee what he described as Iran’s rights and security interests.

Meanwhile, U.S. Central Command confirmed that American forces carried out what it called “self-defense strikes” against Iranian radar and drone facilities over the weekend. U.S. officials said the actions were taken in response to threats against American personnel and assets in the region.

The latest developments further complicate efforts to reduce tensions across the Middle East and revive diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran.

The initiative, known as Debug, aims to combat the spread of illnesses such as dengue fever, Zika, and chikungunya, which are primarily transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, mosquitoes are responsible for more human deaths worldwide than any other animal due to the diseases they spread.

Under the proposal, Google would release male mosquitoes infected with a naturally occurring bacterium called Wolbachia. When these males mate with wild female mosquitoes, the eggs do not hatch, gradually reducing local mosquito populations over time. Because only female mosquitoes bite humans, the released males are not capable of spreading disease.

Google says the program avoids chemicals, toxins, and genetic engineering while building on pest-control techniques that have been used for decades. The company also plans to use sensors, automation, and data analysis to improve the effectiveness of mosquito suppression efforts.

According to a notice published in the Federal Register, the Environmental Protection Agency is reviewing Google’s request for an Experimental Use Permit. The proposal calls for up to 16 million mosquitoes to be released in Florida during the first year and another 16 million in California during the second year.

Federal regulators are currently accepting public comments before making a final decision on the project.

The fund, valued at approximately $1.8 billion, was established by the Justice Department following the settlement of President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service over the leak of his tax records. Supporters argue the fund is intended to compensate Americans who were unfairly targeted by federal agencies, while critics contend it could benefit Trump allies and individuals involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Monday that Democrats plan to force votes on amendments aimed at blocking the program. Schumer said Democrats would continue efforts to prevent taxpayer funds from being used for payouts tied to Trump associates or Jan. 6 defendants.

The fund is also facing resistance from within the Republican Party. Reports indicate nearly half of Senate Republicans expressed concerns during a recent closed-door meeting with Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. Some GOP lawmakers have reportedly demanded stricter oversight measures and limitations on who may qualify for compensation.

The controversy intensified after two federal judges temporarily halted implementation of the fund, citing concerns about potential fraud and eligibility standards. Questions remain about whether individuals convicted of assaulting police officers or participating in the Capitol riot could receive payments.

The future of the fund now appears uncertain as both congressional opposition and legal challenges continue to mount.

The proposed changes, advanced under EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas, would eliminate the agency’s annual EEO-1 data collection and rescind a 1979 regulation that allows employers to voluntarily address documented racial and gender imbalances within their workforce. Supporters of the move argue that employment decisions should be entirely race- and gender-neutral, while critics warn the changes could weaken efforts to identify and combat discrimination.

Since the 1960s, employers with 100 or more workers have been required to report workforce demographics, including race, ethnicity, sex, and job categories. The data has played a significant role in EEOC investigations and enforcement actions, helping identify patterns that may indicate discriminatory hiring or promotion practices.

Former EEOC officials told NPR that the data has been instrumental in recovering billions of dollars for workers through settlements and legal actions. One frequently cited example involved Bass Pro Shops, which agreed to a $10.5 million settlement in 2017 after the EEOC alleged widespread hiring discrimination against Black and Hispanic applicants.

Lucas has argued that demographic data has sometimes been misused to justify race-based employment decisions that could violate federal law. She maintains that equal treatment under the law requires employers to avoid considering race or sex when making hiring and promotion decisions.

The proposals are currently under White House review, and no final decision has been announced.

Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Pence argued that the administration has departed from core GOP values such as limited government, free-market economics, American leadership abroad, and opposition to abortion. While acknowledging Trump’s continued popularity among Republican voters, Pence said many supporters still embrace the party’s historical platform.

“I don’t think there’s any question about the president’s popularity,” Pence said. “I give him all the credit in the world for the hold that he has on Republican voters.”

Pence maintained that most Republican voters support lower taxes, fewer regulations, and a strong U.S. role in world affairs. He also criticized broad-based tariffs, government intervention in business, and what he described as the administration’s failure to take additional action against abortion pills.

The former vice president also warned that Republican success in the upcoming midterm elections could depend more on voter opposition to Democratic policies than support for the GOP’s current direction. He argued that Democrats remain vulnerable due to positions many voters view as too progressive.

Pence was especially critical of the Justice Department’s proposed “anti-weaponization fund,” which could compensate individuals who believe they were unfairly targeted by the federal government. He called the proposal a “bad idea” and said any possibility of compensation for people involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot would be “deeply offensive.”

The comments underscore continuing divisions within the Republican Party over Trump’s influence and the future direction of conservatism.

The decision has drawn criticism from some Jewish leaders while highlighting the political tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The controversy follows a video released by the mayor’s office commemorating the Nakba, an Arabic term meaning “catastrophe” that refers to the displacement of approximately 700,000 Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. Supporters viewed the video as recognition of an important historical event, while critics argued it lacked broader context regarding Jewish displacement and the circumstances surrounding Israel’s founding.

Rabbi Marc Schneier, president of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, criticized Mamdani’s decision and described the video as “propaganda.” Schneier said the mayor’s absence from the parade would be viewed negatively by many members of New York’s Jewish community.

Despite not attending, Mamdani has pledged a substantial police presence to ensure the safety of participants and spectators. New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed she will attend the parade, stating, “It is the mayor’s decision not to march, and it is my decision to march proudly.”

The dispute reflects broader shifts in American public opinion regarding Israel and Palestine. As the city’s first Muslim mayor, Mamdani has maintained that support for Palestinian rights and protection of Jewish New Yorkers are compatible goals. City officials say security measures for the parade remain unchanged as thousands are expected to attend the annual event.

Anthony Odiong was found guilty Friday by a Texas jury on first- and second-degree sexual assault charges after a four-day trial in Waco. Jurors heard testimony from multiple women who accused the priest of exploiting his role as a spiritual counselor to initiate sexual relationships under the guise of religious guidance.

The woman, identified in court proceedings as “Hadassah Doe,” released a statement after the verdict thanking jurors for listening to the evidence. She said church officials could have prevented additional suffering had they acted on her complaints years earlier.

According to reporting by The Guardian and WWL Louisiana, Hadassah Doe first met Odiong in 2007 while he was studying theology in Ohio. She alleged that he manipulated her through years of counseling, convincing her that sexual acts performed during confession, private masses, and other encounters could help secure salvation. She also accused him of taking money from her and emotionally abusing her when she resisted.

Her allegations eventually inspired other women to come forward. Prosecutors presented testimony from two women identified as Mary Doe and Jane Doe, whose accounts helped build the criminal case. Authorities also alleged Odiong fathered a child with a congregant he counseled in Louisiana.

The jury deliberated for roughly two hours before returning guilty verdicts. Odiong now faces a possible life sentence when sentencing begins this week.

Authorities say a 900,000-gallon storage tank containing a corrosive paper-making chemical known as white liquor ruptured Tuesday at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging plant in Longview. As of Friday, nine deaths had been confirmed, with two additional workers still missing and presumed dead.

State officials said no Washington agency was specifically responsible for inspecting the structural integrity of the above-ground tank before the disaster. While underground storage tanks are routinely inspected because of environmental risks, oversight of large above-ground industrial tanks is generally left to facility owners and operators.

The cause of the collapse remains under investigation by the federal Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board. Washington’s Department of Ecology oversees environmental permits at the site, while the Department of Labor and Industries monitors workplace safety compliance, but neither agency conducts structural inspections of storage tanks.

The disaster also triggered environmental concerns. An unknown amount of white liquor spilled from the facility, with some entering nearby waterways and drainage systems connected to the Columbia River. State officials reported collecting more than 20 dead fish in the area and warned residents not to handle any dead wildlife found nearby.

Officials said Longview’s drinking water remains safe, although residents may notice odors near affected drainage areas as cleanup efforts continue.
