Anytime anyone embarks on a new endeavor, it's always unsettling. And you know what? If you're not nervous and a little anxious, then there's a problem. It's almost like you need to have that little level of nervousness for that, for lack of a better term, ‘game on.’

Why this matters: In the fast-paced world of hospitality, it's common for people to feel nervous and unsure when stepping into new roles with more responsibility. As a leader, building trust and empowering your team to excel is crucial, even when they're outside their comfort zone. By creating an environment that encourages learning, collaboration, and growth, you can help your team members see the hospitality industry as a career with exciting potential rather than just a job.

Put Jennifer’s advice into action:

Encourage curiosity: Cultivate an environment where asking questions is celebrated. Encourage your team to explore different aspects of the hospitality industry and discover their passions.
Promote collaboration: Emphasize the importance of teamwork and create opportunities for your team members to work together and learn from one another. Encourage them to check their egos at the door and lean on their colleagues for support.
Embrace change: Help your team understand that change is a constant in the hospitality industry. Encourage them to view change as an opportunity for growth and development, rather than a threat.
Communicate career potential: Show your team the wide array of career paths available within the hospitality industry. From operations to design, real estate to law, help them see all the possibilities and find a good fit for them.
Lead by example: Model the behaviors and attitudes you want to see in your team. Be curious, collaborative, and open to change yourself, and your team will see what this all looks like in action!
