Moving Parts
Imported Factory Robots Declared a National Security Threat
President Trump signed a Section 232 proclamation on Oct. 28 that calls imported industrial robots and machinery a risk to national security, then ordered 180 days of talks with trading partners instead of tariffs. The proclamation admits the US does not make enough industrial robots to meet national security needs, and no American company builds heavy-duty arms that compete with FANUC, ABB, Yaskawa, or KUKA. That is the bind in reshoring policy. New factories run on imported automation, so a tariff on robots is a tax on the plants Washington wants built. The clock gives buyers six months to lock in orders and gives domestic robot makers a policy tailwind they have never had.
US Manufacturing Is Adding Jobs Again, but the Hiring Rules Have Changed
Manufacturers have added 72,000 jobs since December, but the mix looks nothing like the factory floor of the 1990s. Between 2015 and 2025, they cut 244,000 production jobs and added 358,000 in management, business, and financial roles, according to Labor Department data. Automation is doing the sorting. One Phoenix startup expects its new automated line to need one technician and two engineers where it would have hired five technicians, so payroll moves up the skill ladder instead of shrinking. Training capacity is now the limit on reshoring, a case we made in How We Broke the Trades Pipeline.
AI’s Memory Squeeze Sends PC Production Back to China
HP, Asus, and Acer are moving some notebook assembly from Thailand and Vietnam back to Chinese contract makers like Luxshare and Huaqin, Nikkei Asia reported, and Dell is weighing the same move. Memory is the trigger. Processors, memory, and storage made up about 68% of a mainstream notebook’s parts bill in Q3, up from 45% in early 2025, according to TrendForce, while Taiwanese assemblers like Quanta and Foxconn are busy building AI servers. Labor costs and tariff exposure drove China, but both matter less when two-thirds of the product is chips. Access to components now decides where things get assembled.
Shipowners Are Putting Off Maintenance as Rates and Costs Climb
Strong freight rates and high operating costs are pushing owners to delay maintenance a little longer, Wärtsilä’s chief told Lloyd’s List. Wärtsilä’s own Q3 report puts it plainly. Higher fuel prices cut short-term service spending, and high shipping rates led owners to postpone service work to keep ships earning. Deferral makes sense in a hot market, but the fleet is aging and the bill compounds. The US Navy is living the downside right now, with record deployments feeding a years-long maintenance backlog. Commercial owners should expect the same crunch at repair yards when rates cool and everyone books at once.
Shippers Are Paying 32% More to Move the Same Freight
The US Bank Freight Payment Index shows Q3 shipper spending up 32.1% from a year ago, the biggest jump since 2021, while shipment volumes rose just 0.5%. Tight capacity and diesel above $6.50 a gallon did the work, and spending in the Southwest rose 51.6% as enforcement actions pulled drivers off domestic loads. Rates are recovering while demand is not. Carriers that survived the freight recession finally have pricing power, and shippers are planning 2027 bids in a market where trucks, not freight, are the scarce input. DAT’s Dean Croke explains why on this week’s Dynamo Show.
Capital At Work
Neuron Industries Raises $10M Seed to Rebuild the Factory Controller
Neuron builds an AI-native industrial controller where engineers describe machine behavior in plain English, inspect the code it generates, and test it in simulation before it touches equipment. FCVC and Obvious Ventures co-led. The controller is the most entrenched layer in a factory, tied to vendor-specific tools that few new engineers are trained on, and every new plant has to be programmed and commissioned before it produces anything. Neuron replaced a 1991 Siemens S5 controller on a live production line with eight hours of downtime, which is the kind of proof brownfield buyers need.
Bedrock Robotics Raises $600M Series C at a $4.1B Valuation
CapitalG and Emergence Capital co-led the round, which takes Bedrock’s total funding to nearly $1B for technology that makes excavators and other heavy equipment autonomous. Its machines already do paid work for builders like Sundt, Zachry, and Haydon, including on data center jobs. Construction tech rounds usually land under $50M, so a check this size says investors see the heavy civil labor shortage as a hardware problem worth funding at scale.
Group14 Closes €150M Series D Extension to Build a Silicon Battery Plant in Spain
The extension funds Group14’s first large European plant, a 10 GWh silicon battery materials facility in Sagunto, adding to its sites in Korea and Moses Lake, Washington. CEO Rick Luebbe’s argument is that material producers have to sit where batteries are made. Battery materials are following cells into local supply chains, and Spain, Europe’s second-largest car producer, is where the demand is.
Bought Not Built
GE Vernova Buys Trench Group for $9B
GE Vernova agreed to buy high-voltage component maker Trench Group from Triton Partners, adding bushings, instrument transformers, and coils sold to more than 800 utility and hyperscaler customers. CEO Scott Strazik pitched it as a lead-time deal. Owning Trench’s factories, including a new North Carolina plant that will be the first US maker of 765 kV bushings, gives GE Vernova control over the parts that set substation schedules. It comes in the same quarter gas turbine orders slowed, a sign the next leg of growth is in the wires.
DoorDash Buys Instacart for $17B
DoorDash will pay $65 a share in cash and stock, less than half of Instacart’s $39B peak valuation. It gets the grocer relationships, enterprise software, and years of learning how to pick and deliver perishables, which CEO Tony Xu called one of the hardest things to get right online. Combined, the two become the default delivery layer for regional grocers trying to keep up with Amazon and Walmart’s same-day networks. The deal is expected to close at the end of 2027 or early 2028.
Boluda Shipping Buys Samskip
Spain’s Boluda agreed to acquire Rotterdam-based Samskip, creating a shortsea network of 32 vessels on 18 routes across 28 countries, plus 21 maritime terminals, five rail terminals, and more than 500 trucks. It is a bet that European cargo keeps shifting from long-haul trucks to sea and rail, and that the operator owning all three legs wins the contract.
From The Portfolio
FCC Clears Manna’s 383.2 Drone for the US Market
Manna won an FCC Covered List exemption for its 383.2 aircraft after a conditional approval from the Department of War. Every foreign-made drone has been barred from new FCC authorizations since December 2025, so the exemption, tied to Manna’s onshoring plan, clears the way to fly its aircraft in the US. It follows Manna naming Tulsa its US operations and manufacturing base, with more than 1,000 jobs planned.
On The Dynamo Show
The First Freight Recovery Not Driven by Demand
DAT analyst Dean Croke joins Madelyn O’Farrell to explain why freight rates are climbing while volumes sit flat. Years of excess capacity and new enforcement actions have thinned the driver pool, AI data center construction is pulling flatbed demand, and Croke expects 2027 to bring tight capacity and more volatility. He also makes the case for autonomous trucks as support for drivers on risky overnight runs rather than a replacement for them.
