Education: A Frontier of Experiential Hospitality?

“Experience” and “community” are two words so overused that we risk thinking about them too simplistically and missing out on their power in hospitality.

There are a few things on my mind this morning that set the stage for the topic we’ll dive into:

What Bill Graf mentioned in our discussion on the next wave of hospitality: on transformation being the gold standard for experiences
What Charlie MacGregor shared yesterday about community and this morning about what he learned through volunteering at a refugee camp

Today, we’ll explore the intersection of community, experience, and education and the opportunities it represents in hospitality.

The big idea: Education leads to transformation, building vibrant communities and thriving hospitality businesses.

You need to think about how to bring [your community] together in a nice and natural way. One of the ways that we felt was a very genuine way to do that was through education and lifelong learning.

Why this matters: Community is powerful, but you can’t cultivate it just because you want it. You need a catalyst for connecting people.

Put this into action:

Brainstorm: What might your guests be interested in learning?
Assess: Who do you know who could teach this? (Think expansively - this can be a great opportunity to develop your team or spotlight a great organization in your area)
Pilot: Start small - you can begin with a small talk hosted in your space and see what the reception is. Learn and grow!
