First is always the intent, your purpose. I didn't go to work at Ritz-Carlton or Capella to run a hotel company. I went there to create the finest in the world. That was the intent every day. My actions followed the intent.

Why this matters: If you want to achieve excellence, you need to do everything with the clarity that comes from a specific purpose. This will guide you in creating an exceptional hospitality experience for your guests, an engaging environment for your teams, and profits for your business partners. And as you do all of this, your work will be more satisfying and impactful.

Put this into action:

Define your intent and purpose. Ask yourself, "What is my vision for my work and life?"
Dream big. Don't limit yourself to what you can currently do, but focus on what you ultimately wish to achieve.
Challenge the notion of "arrogance" when setting ambitious goals. Recognize that striving for excellence benefits everyone involved.
Consider the legacy you want to leave. Ask, "What would I like to tell my grandchildren about what I have accomplished?"
Ensure your purpose benefits all stakeholders—not just yourself! Be honest: Is it really good for investors, employees, the market, and society at large?
As you do this, cultivate a sense of purpose in your team. Help them understand the higher intent behind their work and pursue this journey themselves.
